# Upgrade Guide

**Intended Audience: OpenSlice Administrators**

This section walks you through upgrading a running OpenSlice instance from one release to the next.

Guides are version-specific and assume you are moving between two adjacent releases. If your

deployment is more than one release behind, work through each guide in order rather than skipping

ahead.

## Before you begin

**Back up your databases.** The services run Hibernate with `ddl-auto: update`, so the schema

migrates itself on first start of the new release and nothing migrates it back. The backup commands

for each deployment method are the first step of their respective sections below.
