5.6.1 and 5.6.1 applicable to on-screen graphic controls?
The following question was submitted by Detlev Fischer by email some time ago:
I have a question on clauses 5.6.1 (Tactile or auditory status) and 5.6.2 (Visual status) of EN 301 549 V3.2.1: Are those criteria applicable on graphic controls (and text controls)? You can find those criteria in table A.2 of Annex A, which says you have to consider them for conformance with EN 301 549. During a discussion we came across two interpretations: Criteria are only applicable on physical controls like mentioned caps lock key from NOTE 2 Criteria are also applicable on non-physical graphic controls (text controls) with different states like a checkbox or a toggle button inside a mobile app
Clauses 5.6.1/5.6.2 are not covered for websites in table A.1. Missing physical controls on websites could be the reason. But inside mobile apps there are not any physical elements as well. The existence in table A.2 could be an evidence that graphic elements are covered by 5.6.1/5.6.2. In addition, graphic elements are not excluded in the criteria description. However, why are 5.6.1/5.6.2 not covered in table A.1 for websites in this case?
5.6.1 for graphic / text controls are tested regarding the status in 11.4.1.2 anyway. But it’s not new that similar/same cases could be evaluated in different criteria. There is no Understanding document about EN criteria like there is for WCAG. I didn’t found a discussion issue about my question on your discussion board (https://labs.etsi.org/rep/HF/en301549/-/issues). Perhaps you can tell me how to interpret EN in this question.
