ICT Definition needs tweak
the current definition is restricted to equipment. Suggest removing the equipment phrase
Information and Communication Technology (ICT): technology, equipment, or interconnected system or subsystem
of equipmentfor which the principal function is the creation, conversion, duplication, automatic acquisition, storage, analysis, evaluation, manipulation, management, movement, control, display, switching, interchange, transmission, reception, or broadcast of data or information.
I think this definition is both too narrow and too broad.
The following should not be covered but are in fact included in this definition depending on what the definition of equipment is.
- retracting ballpoint pens
- billboards that rotate
- gates at the go up and down at parking lot (maybe)
- mechanical typewriters
The following should be covered but are not clearly covered
- games
- painting software
- millions of digital products whose primary function is not information - but use digital UI's
Perhaps the "subsystem" saves us because if they have a digital UI then it would have a "subsystem whose primary function is ..... because the primary function of a UI is to gather or control or display information. But if so we should make that clear.
Suggest we make the following change to the definition
- add digital
- delete "of equipment"
- and add NOTE 2 below.
Information and Communication Technology (ICT): digital__ technology, equipment, or interconnected system or subsystem
of equipmentfor which the principal function is the creation, conversion, duplication, automatic acquisition, storage, analysis, evaluation, manipulation, management, movement, control, display, switching, interchange, transmission, reception, or broadcast of data or information.
NOTE 1: Examples of ICT are web pages, electronic content, telecommunications products, computers and ancillary equipment, software including mobile applications, information kiosks and transaction machines, videos, IT services, and multifunction office machines which copy, scan, and fax documents.
NOTE 2: Anything with a digital interface would have a subsystem (the UI) whose primary purpose is the gathering and display of data or information.
I actually would like to suggest a much simpler definition:
Information and Communication Technology (ICT): any technology that has a digital user interface.
